Consultancy Support for Implementation & Training On the Race Equality Duty
The Client developed an initial programme of work to implement the public duty to promote race equality and asked Schneider~Ross to help them to build on this initial programme by ensuring that the Council and staff at all levels understood the implications of the public duty for their work, and that those with relevant areas of responsibility were equipped to implement the duty; for example by carrying out monitoring and impact assessments of services and policies and ensuring that consumers from all backgrounds had access to these services. Following an initial exercise of assessing all functions and policies for relevance to racial equality, four main functions were identified for full impact assessment.
Schneider~Ross developed an approach that was consistent with good practice elsewhere, and which aimed to ensure that the organisation could be proud of its progress in implementing the duty. This meant establishing actions based on priorities and needs and identifying ways of embedding knowledge and understanding in day to day activities – rather than following an 'off the peg', blanket approach.
