Partnerships: Creating A Breakthrough On Disability - Aug 2007
Everyone has an interest in trying to attract and retain people with disabilities in employment. The government wants to reduce its incapacity benefit bill. People with disabilities want to be treated on their merits and have a fair chance at work. Employers want to tap into all sources of talent and make sure that they don’t unnecessarily lose valuable experience. So why does it seem so tough to do?
In March 2007, a number of organisations who already have an active interest in disability, with strategies in place, attended an event organised by the “Evening With A Difference” team (Phil Friend, Stephen Lloyd, Simon Minty, James Partridge). The meeting was held at the Brit Oval, sponsored by DWP (the Department of Work & Pensions) with the objective of engaging employers and service providers in the process of change and the aim that these groups would work together post the event to drive this change forward.
Since then, Robin Schneider has been working on a pro bono basis with the team he facilitated on the evening to start making a real difference. The team involves three large employers (BT and Manpower) and two key service providers (The Shaw Trust and DWP themselves.) The team are setting themselves some challenging objectives for change and a sub set of this group is about to launch a major recruitment activity for people with disabilities in Blackburn.
We’ll be posting updates to report how the team is getting on.
