Major blue chip companies need to look beyond simple figures on gender diversity, according to a leading diversity and inclusion consultant.
Freddie Alves, who works with a global diversity network that includes Barclays, BP, Shell, Tyco and Unilever, told PM that the group's benchmarking process "has highlighted that it is very dangerous simply to focus on the headline workforce composition numbers
Instead, organisations should look at whether their jobs are creating the right situations for both men and women", said Alves, a director at diversity consultancy Schneider-Ross.
The network was first developed in 2000. Members compare best practice and set out a series of benchmarks and two-year targets to help integrate diversity and inclusion into the business.
