Towards Racial Equality - CRE Launches Research Evaluating the Impact of Public Duty
The Commission for Racial Equality (CRE) recently launched research which evaluates the Public Duty to promote race equality and good race relations in England and Wales. The survey 'Towards Racial Equality' was conducted by Schneider~Ross and is the first check on progress in putting the ground breaking race legislation into practice.
The Race Relations Amendment Act (2000) requires public bodies - including all local authorities, government departments, health trusts, police forces, education bodies and schools - to make improvements on race equality across their activities.
Please see the bottom of this release for more information and for contact details. The Executive Summary from the report can also be found on this page of our site along with samples of the surveys which we used for this research.
The report can be purchased from HMSO for £10 + p&p Tel: 0870 600 5522 www.hmso.gov.uk
"I strongly welcome this report, which the Commission for Racial Equality has commissioned from Schneider-Ross. It acts as a progress report on tackling racial discrimination in Wales and provides the first reakl evidence of how public authorities are facing up to the challenges of the Race Relations (Ammendment) act 2000.
It provides clear and in some cases disturbing evidence of the problems we face, the benefits of addressing institutional racism and the areas where there is still a great deal to be done. This report demonstrates the real significance of mainstreaming racial equality and the General Duty in everything we do. It shows the need to deliver real outcomes on the ground and avoid getting caught up with the unnecessary paper chasing."
Sir Jon Shortridge KCB, Permanent Secretary, National Assembly for Wales.

"Matt Barrett, the Barclays chief executive and Sir Richard Wilson, the Cabinet Secretary, may not be the most obvious soul mates: But last night both men apparently spoke with conviction on the subject of "equality and diversity" at a do organised by Schneider~Ross, the consultancy.
