To release real business value from their work on equality, diversity and inclusion, organisations need to build this thinking into all their policies and relationships.

This obviously extends to all core HR policies – for instance, recruitment, development, reward, performance management and retention. Similarly, diversity is often core to organisations’ approach to sustainability and corporate responsibility.

In addition, it needs to embrace all aspects of product design and service delivery. In the public sector, this process is being accelerated by the notion of the “public duty” – which places a responsibility on public institutions to ensure that this is the case. In the private sector, as society becomes increasingly diverse, there are significant commercial incentives for companies to embrace different segments of their market. The days of producer-led, “one size fits all” thinking are numbered – if not already dead and buried.
